Logitech C920 vs C922 – Which is best for Live Streamers?

Last Updated on 05/18/2021 by Dean

Wondering whether it’s worth getting the C920 over the C922?

The Logitech C920 and C922 are some of the most commonly used webcams among live streamers. For good reason, these affordable webcams provide a great picture quality considering their pricing.

But people are often left wondering, whether they should get the Logitech C922 or the less expensive C920. This article will cover the advantages and disadvantages of both models and help you make your decision.

Logitech C920

  • 1080P/30FPS
  • FOV: 78 degrees
  • Built-in 2 Omnidirectional microphones
  • Logitech Capture software

The Logitech C920 is a very popular streaming webcam and widely considered as THE budget camera for live streamers.

If you’re looking for a budget webcam for less than $100 (sometimes this webcam can be found for less than $50!), the Logitech C920 offers amazing picture quality.

This webcam can stream 1080p at 30fps. For zoom and skype calls, the C920 tops out at 720p for some reason though so keep that in mind.

Just like every other Logitech product, you can completely personalize the settings of the webcam through the Logitech Capture Software.

To this day, this webcam is used by popular Twitch streamers such as Scarra, Michael Reeves, and Disguised Toast.

Logitech C922

  • 1080P/30FPS
  • 720P/60FPS
  • FOV: 78 degrees
  • Built-in 2 Omnidirectional microphones
  • Logitech Capture software

The Logitech C922 is the updated, more expensive brother of the Logitech C920. This model comes with a glass camera lens (C920 has a standard lens) and can stream at 60FPS provided that you record in 720P.

The 720p/60FPS ability makes the Logitech C922 a bit more aimed towards Twitch streamers as they are likely to be streaming at 60FPS. After all, it can look a bit odd if your game is streaming at 60FPS while your webcam is only streaming at 30FPS.

That being said, the 60FPS ability is about the only thing that really makes the C922 stand out from its less expensive brother the C920. Quality-wise, the cameras are almost identical. While the C922 is an updated model with newer firmware, you can barely tell the difference in quality when both cameras are turned.

Unlike the C920, this camera can handle zoom and skype calls at 1080p.

Twitch streamers who use this camera are: Ryan Higa, Yvonnie.

What is the difference between the Logitech C920 vs C922?

While the Logitech C922 is a newer model, the C920 and C922 webcams don’t actually differ all that much.

Here are some of the noticeable improvements found in the C922 over the C920:

  • Ability to stream 720p at 60fps
  • Ability to stream 1080p on skype and zoom calls
  • C922 has improved autofocus

Logitech C920 vs C922: Video Quality

Both the Logitech C920 and C922 shoot in 1080p and while the C922 is supposed to be a newer version, there is almost no visible video quality difference between the two.

If you don’t believe me, the video below will show you exactly how insignificant the quality difference is.

So if you were considering getting the Logitech C920 over the C922 because you were expecting a higher image quality, hopefully, this cleared that up for you!

Logitech C920 vs C922: Audio Quality

Both the Logitech C920 and C922 come with two built-in omnidirectional microphones. Now, if you’re a streamer, I strongly hope that you are NOT using a built-in microphone to talk to your stream. You should always be using an external microphone, even just a budget microphone will make a world of difference.

That being said, there is no audible difference between the way the built-in microphones sound on both models.

Logitech C920 vs C922: Autofocus

As I mentioned earlier, the newer Logitech C922 has improved autofocus over the older C920 webcam as you can see in the video below.

A pretty significant change between the two, the C922 is clearly better but you have to ask yourself whether that’s worth it. Since this is a webcam, how often will you really need the autofocus? It’s not like you’re going to be focussing on anything but your face, right?

Logitech C920 vs C922 which is better?

Obviously, the Logitech C922 is slightly better than the Logitech C920 webcam, being an upgraded version at a more expensive price point, we can only expect so much. However, the differences are so minimal that you have to wonder whether it’s worth the price increase.

I would say no. Considering there is no increase in picture quality, I don’t think it’s worth getting the C922 over the C920 for reasons such as streaming at 60fps or having 1080p zoom/skype calls.

If you really want those things and are willing to pay more, I would shell out a bit more and opt for the higher quality Logitech Streamcam or Logitech Brio instead.

This is just personal preference of course! Whichever you pick, the C920 and C922 both look gorgeous when streaming in ideal lighting conditions.

Get the most out of your C920 or C922 webcam

Even the best webcam can look bad when not used properly. While webcams are plug-and-play devices, you cannot expect them to function in poor lighting or without some minor tweaking of the settings to best fit your room.

Get a lighting kit

Your room lighting isn’t designed for a stream setup, they are designed to keep your room lit up. Professional streamers never have room lighting on while live and instead rely on lighting kits to illuminate themselves and make them ‘pop out’ from their backgrounds.

Lighting kits don’t have to be expensive either, you can find such a kit for under $50. In a separate buyer guide, I cover everything you need to know about lighting your Twitch stream.

Change the webcam settings

You should download the Logitech Capture software to change your webcam settings.

By installing this software, you’ll get access to the settings of your webcam and you’ll be able to configure it to best fit your lighting setup.

The following settings can be modified:

  • Exposure
  • Gain
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • White balance

These settings will most impact your webcam if the picture quality of your C920 or C922 doesn’t look good.

Exposure

Many newer streamers struggle with over-exposure, this means that you have too much light coming in and your webcam ends up looking white, this is called over-exposure. The exposure setting will let you get rid of this effect.

White balance

The white balance determines the color temperature of your video quality (from yellow to blue). By changing this setting you can fix the common issue of having a webcam that looks too cool or too warm.

Gain

The gain setting will determine how sensitive your webcam is to lights. Slide this around until it looks just right. Auto-gain should always be turned off as this tends to be terrible.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this article has shown you just how little difference there is between the Logitech C920 and C922. No wonder many Logitech-lovers are upset that Logitech decided to launch a new webcam which is really not much more than a firmware update.

If you want 1080p zoom/skype calls or want to stream in 60fps, the slight price jump might be worth it for you, otherwise, you’ll be just fine with the less expensive Logitech C920.
